The Who
Who's Next [DVD]
(DVD - Eagle Vision #30170)

Who's Next is viewed by many as the greatest testament to the songwriting talent of Pete Townshend and the musical power of The Who. When the album was released in 1971 it climbed to the Number 1 spot on the British Album chart and remained in the Top 50 for over three months. In the United States, the album went Top 5 on the Billboard chart and remained in the Top 40 for five months. The story of how The Who came to record the album is told by group members Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, and John Entwistle, together with contributions by those who were close to the group during the making of this classic album.
Early archive footage of The Who performing classic tracks such as / Can't Explain and My Generation help to illustrate how the group made the transition from performing in small London clubs, to the rock giants they became upon the release of the pioneering Tommy album. Pete Townshend explains the difficulties the group faced in trying to bring to fruition the ideas he planned for the group's follow up, the ground breaking "rock opera" Tommy. The original idea, as Roger Daltrey tells us, was for a multi-media event that would incorporate a live concert, a film and a soundtrack album. When Townshend's vision proved beyond the grasp of his fellow group members, The Who set about recording the songs that would have made up the soundtrack to the proposed movie.
The songs recorded for the Who's Next album and featured here, include such classics as Won't Get Fooled Again, Baba O'Riley and Behind Blue Eyes. We hear from the group members how these songs would nave fitted into the original concept. We are also given an insight as to the importance of the late great Keith Moon to the success of The Who, and hear how his larger than life personality often overshadowed his musical contribution to the group.
Included in this documentary programme are previously unseen performances of songs from the album that prove the longevity and lasting appeal of Who's Next, a true Classic Album.

The Beatles Unauthorized/Fun with the Fab Four

Fun with the Fab Four

I plan to buy Fun with the Fab Four as soon as possible, and at the price it has, there is no reason to pass it up! Its going for a penny in the used section! oh, and if anyone knows where to get George Harrison's pirate song sketch from Eric Idle's television program, Id be much obliged. thanks!

I absolutely loved this DVD. I was a little skeptical at first because it was so cheap, but it was such a bargain. I wouldn't recommend this DVD to the casual Beatles fan, however. It is filled with rare interviews with the boys, from various cities on various tours. There's no music in it, just an hour of talking, but it is well worth it. The interviews are treaures, to see the interaction between the four members. They were very close and it shows. The Pyramus and Thisbe skit is so hilarious, I would have bought it just for that one scene. There are many numerous hilarious moments withing this DVD. Like John saying that The Beatles is just a name "you know, like shoe. We could have been called the Shoes for all you know." Things like that. There are some things on this that are also in Anthology, but it is still well worth it.

If like the Beatles, but aren't too crazy for them, do not buy this movie. You'll find it boring, hard to follow, and won't be able to make out most of what they're saying.
But if you're a truly obsessed Beatles fan, THIS MOVIE IS A NECESITY! You may think you've seen everything there is to see, what with the Beatles Anthology, the First US Visit, AHDN, and etc., but your knowlege of the Beatles is incomplete without seeing this movie. In the Anthology, for example, you only see the first minute or so of John's apology for his Jesus statement at a Chicago press conference in August of 1966. It ends with "I said what I said, and it was wrong, or was taken wrong, and now it's all this!" In this movie, however, you can hear the rest of his statement. Also, in the First US Visit DVD, you see only part of their first press conference at JFK airport. Did you know they swore in it? I didn't! It's an incredibly mild swear, but I was still very surprised to hear the Beatles say it in public that early on. Sure, they swore a lot (and I mean A LOT) even back in the Hamburg/Cavern days, but here, they were supposed to be clean cut boys!
You'll find it interesting, hilarious, and even though it is incomprehensible at moments, (if you're a truly obsessive Beatlemaniac) you'll rewind and rewatch/relisten to the scenes until you're able to know everything they said. John is his usual hilarious self, and you'll crack up at almost everything he has to say.
I just finished watching it for the first time, and am incredibly pleased. I haven't previously seen much of anything that was shown here. My sister and father, casual Beatles fans, started watching it with me, but left in the middle of it, saying it was too boring. I couldn't disagree more! I completely into it, smiling like an idiot through the whole thing (as I always do with anything that has anything to do with the Fab Four).
Great movie!

Unauthorized

The Beatles Unauthorized is a 51 minute feature compiled by Good Times video of public domain Beatles material. The main part of this disc is devoted to The Beatles first US concert in Washington, DC. The picture is horrible and the sound is pretty bad too, at least on the concert segment. I'm sure if you were there that night, the sound would have been pretty murky too. There wasn't really equipment back then for bands to fill stadiums with sound. Bands or singers didn't fill stadiums. Nobody except Elvis had that sort of unearthly popularity and even he was dwarfed by the hysteria of the Fab Four.

Another amusing segment has an old game show called "I've Got a Secret" in which a person comes on and tells the host a secret and then the contestants have to figure out what the secret was that was whispered in the hosts ear by questioning. The person in question for this show is Pete Best, the Beatles ex-drummer. It's funny because he says that he QUIT the Beatles because he wanted to start his own band. In reality, he was fired.

The last major segment is an interview with the Beatles in 1966 right before Candlestick Park, their last tour stop. It's quite entertaining when one interviewer asks "Is the song 'Day Tripper' about a prostitute?" In fact, he should have been asking about what drug it was about!

Overall, this disc should only be bought by a real Beatles fan. The poor quality of the concert is nothing a casual fan would want. It's more of historical interest. So I guess if you want the gameshow bit and the interview at the end, its worth 5$. The sound and picture is television of the era quality which is decent.

I would recommend The Beatles Anthology over this. Also, Good Times has another DVD composed entirely of non-musical bits of the Beatles called Fun with the Fab Four. That disc is much better. Sometimes you can find both in a two disc set.

If you have the Beatles Anthology, this is a waste of time and money. The bulk of the entire 51 minutes here consists of the Beatles February, 1964 in Washington, D.C. Most of that was already aired on the Anthology, and they used a cleaner, crisper tape source. Here the audio is terrible and the video is grainy, muted and washed out. There are no tight camera angles and everything is shot from a blurry distance. The entire footage from here is dreadful.

More interesting is the brief segment with Pete Best, from the American game show, "I've Got a Secret." Watching Pete and hearing him interact proves conclusively that Ringo was the right replacement for the boys. Not only could Ringo drum circles around Pete, Ringo's charismatic personality cemented the Fab's legacy. It's impossible not to love Ringo, from this footage it seems a stretch that Pete could ever have won a solid fan base, he's not funny, stiff, and has zero charisma.

The only decent bit on the entire DVD is some brief footage (not shown on the Anthology), of the Beatles right before taking the stage in August, 1966, at Candlestick Park. I bought this solely because I am a die-hard Beatlemanic and had never seen this rare footage before. It lasts only 70 seconds. If you're a hardened fanatic like me, you'll have to buy this DVD just for those previous 70 seconds. If you're just a casual fan, pass on this.

The Beatles Phenomenon

This is a story of staggering musical progress and development, that took the Beatles from the simplistic but catchy Love Me Do to the groundbreaking triumph of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in fewer than five years.
This exclusive DVD brings new, fresh and a different insight into the Beatles phenomenon. It seeks the opinion, memories, recollections and views of a host of people who were close to the band and who saw them making their music.
Hear the controversial story of Pete Best from the man himself, in an exclusive interview that covers his time with the band, Hamburg, and the murky circumstances that surrounded the departure of one of the fan's favourites!
We hear from Norman Smith, who as "Hurricane" Smith had hits of his own in the seventies but who, as an Abbey Road engineer, worked on Beatles hits such as She Loves You, A Hard Day's Night and I Want To Hold Your Hand. Other contributors include Bill Harry, editor of the legendary Liverpool music paper Mersey Beat, Tony Barrow, the PR man at Brian Epstein's NEMS company, who wrote many of the album's sleeve notes; Geoffrey Ellis, Managing Director of NEMS; and Dave Robinson, a man who took many photographs of the band during the excitement of the Cavern era in Liverpool.
And naturally, there's the band itself, belting out the hits in glorious black and white, reminding us all why they were and still are the world's greatest ever rock group.
Featured tracks include: Love Me Do, Twist And Shot, A Hard Day's Night, Yesterday, She Loves You, I Feel Fine and more...

Rolling Stones - Music Box Biographical (DVD IMPORT ZONE 2)

This edition of the Music Box Biographical Collection tells the remarkable tale of the career of The Rolling Stones. Consisting of footage taken from throughout their decades long career, this film shows how Mich Jagger and Keith Richards survived changes in popular taste and tumultuous personal relationships in order to keep their band one of the longest living entities in rock history.

The DVD is simply a biography of the band using vintage footage, black and white photographs. Some of the film footage is simply shown over and over again while someone talks about the history of the band. The narrator is female and for starters, she doesn’t seem comfortable reading the script and stumbles over many sections. Then there’s the fact that what she’s reading is incorrect a number of times, such as in a particular title of a Beatles album when she’s comparing the music of both bands. Years that albums and songs were released are also incorrect, although less likely to be noticed. The first thing the creators of this DVD should have done was actual research. I don’t know where they got their facts from.

I don’t see how the promotional blurb for this DVD can call it a comprehensive history. The DVD jumps from their playing cover songs of popular U.S. artists in clubs back in the early 1960’s to their recording Their Satanic Majesties Request in 1967. After that, it’s back to the issue of their drug use in the 1960's and multiple drug busts. The Brian Jones era of the band is over less than 10 minutes into this and it feels like he's been hardly given any attention or any credit. Instead, the narrator seems to be suggesting that Jones was dragging down the rest of the band and once he was gone, Keith Richards was able to come into his own. Whether that's true or not on Richards' part isn't the issue, but to dismiss Jones' contribution to the band seems rather ignorant on the part of whoever put this documentary together.

On top of everything else, the picture was distorted, and even the photographs seem to be stretched and crunched at various times. There is also NO STONES MUSIC at all in this documentary. The narration is read to background music by studio musicians. Every now and then I caught a few chords that were from Stones songs, but other than that, it was just filler. The sound was muddy. Most of the time I had difficulty hearing the old footage, and this is a huge issue when you are talking about interviews (and it had nothing to do with Keith Richards being his usual unintelligible self). It wasn't cleaned up at all. The footage filmed expressly for this production is fine, but a sound mixer should have been brought in to take care of the old footage. However, I don’t think that would have saved The Rolling Stones: Music Box Biographical Collection from being one of the worst music documentaries I’ve ever seen, but at least it would have taken one negative off the table.

This had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. If I could rate it zero stars, I would. They should pay me for the time I wasted watching it. That’s 45 minutes I can never get back.
